US President Donald Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr, roasted Hillary Clinton over her casual quip that blacks “all look alike” and pointed out the hypocrisy in mainstream media, on Tuesday.
Trump Jr was referring to a rather stunning remark the former first lady and ex-Secretary of State made at an event held over the weekend. During the event’s Q&A segment, moderator Kara Swisher asked Clinton about her thoughts on Democratic senator Cory Booker.
When Clinton responded, “I adore him,” Swisher said, “But what do you think of him saying, ‘Kick them in the shins’?”
Swisher had erroneously attributed the paraphrased quote to the wrong person. She was referring to former attorney-general Eric Holder who served during former president Barack Obama’s administration.
Earlier this month, Holder referred to ex-First Lady Michelle Obama’s famous quote “When they go low, we go high,” as he said of Republicans: “When they go low, we kick them. That’s what this new Democratic Party is about.”
Clinton was quick to correct Swisher. She said, “Well, that was Eric Holder,” prompting Swisher to apologise: “Eric Holder, oh, Eric Holder, sorry.”
This was when Clinton casually quipped, “Yeah, I know they all look alike.”
Swisher immediately said, “No, they don’t,” before noticing the audience lauging along with Clinton. The host then praised Clinton for the remark and said, “Oh, well done,” as the crowd applauded.
Interestingly, Clinton had just spoken about the merits of political correctness before she made the ill-advised remark. She had preached:
“What’s often called political correctness is politeness. It’s respecting the diversity that we have in our society. The Democratic Party is a much more diverse political party, attracting people who are African-American, Latino, LGBT…And I don’t think it’s politically correct to say, we value that.
“I don’t want to go around insulting people, painting people with a broad brush. That’s childish.”
Earlier, at the same event, Clinton – a two-time failed presidential candidate – also left the door open for a 2020 presidential election run, admitting that she really wants to be President and asserting that she has what it takes to do the job.
The son of the man Clinton ran against and failed in the 2016 election was quick to catch Clinton’s remark as he pointed out that the media – which had largely failed to report on her remark – would have had a field day if his father had made the same remark.
Donald Trump Jr tweeted: “Imagine @realDonaldTrump said the exact same thing in the exact same way. What would the media response be? Hysteria? Outrage? It would likely be beyond all that. Because I’m hearing crickets right now after Hillary said it. Wonder why.”
