$50K offer from X for recycled usernames sparks digital buzz

X has been sending out solicitation emails with a tantalizing proposition – a flat fee of $50k to initiate a purchase of inactive user accounts. The social media giant, formerly known as Twitter and now under the stewardship of Elon Musk, has been diligently searching for potential buyers of these dormant user handles, offering an intriguing opportunity for users to secure coveted digital real estate.

A $50k offer for recycled usernames

This endeavor by X marks a significant shift from its earlier policies. Back in May, Elon Musk announced the company’s intention to initiate a massive account purge, targeting accounts that had long been dormant. Musk alluded to plans for recycling these disused handles or usernames, sparking curiosity and speculation across the digital landscape.

Unveiling a tantalizing development, emails seen by Forbes reveal the existence of a dedicated task force within X, aptly named the “@Handle Team.” This specialized group is now fervently working on establishing a marketplace where users can purchase handles tied to inactive accounts.

New X policy

This newfound initiative follows a change in X’s policy earlier this year, mandating that users must log in at least once every 30 days to maintain their active status. Those who fail to comply with this stipulation risk having their accounts suspended or permanently removed, though the exact duration of inactivity required for account removal remains shrouded in mystery.

A ‘handle marketplace’?

As of now, the prospect of obtaining an inactive user handle remains elusive for the average user. X’s official website still states that it cannot release inactive usernames. However, the Forbes report suggests that the company is actively exploring the possibility of creating a handle marketplace, potentially opening up a new revenue stream by catering to the interests of its users.

It appears that Elon Musk never runs out of surprises.
