VIDEO | Cyclists take up all 3 lanes of West Coast Highway, netizens ask ‘where are the TP and LTA officers?’

A group of cyclists were caught on camera taking up all three lanes of the West Coast Highway, endangering themselves and other road users. A video of the incident was posted on Facebook page SG Road Vigilante – SGRV on Thursday (June 16).

It appears that the video showing the group’s reckless behaviour was captured by a fellow cyclist’s GoPro camera. Several cyclists were seen veering across adjacent lanes, while the speedometer in the top right corner of the video indicated that they were going over 50km/h.

Although their actual speed can’t be confirmed, the cyclists still posed a risk to public safety by occupying all three lanes of the highway.

Netizens commented on the video, questioning the presence of Land Transport Authority (LTA) or Traffic Police (TP) officers on the road.

“Like their grandfather’s road. TP do something, don’t sleeping le,” said a netizen.

“You might think there is no TP around and you can drive recklessly, but don’t forget, ‘There are many eyes around you!'” wrote SG Road Vigilante in the caption.

Many also highlighted that heavy vehicles often travel through the area. “Just need a big lorry, and a driver who doesn’t pay attention behind the wheel and these pests cyclist will all be history. Tour de Singapore become tour de pancake,” said Facebook user Melvin Neo illustrating a worst-case scenario.

“Another bunch of idiots hogging the road. Then complain saying so much regulations, can’t even simply keep left still want to make noise about drivers not giving way and dangerously close up,” added Facebook user Seow Junhua.

The post repeated the recent decision against registering bicycles. The active mobility advisory panel reviewed regulations on road cycling in October last year, deciding against the recommendation for cyclist or bicycle registration.

Instead, it encouraged authorities to enhance public education of road rules and guidelines, such as introducing a safety handbook to promote greater awareness of the regulations for both cyclists and motorists, said SG Road Vigilante. /TISG
