‘There’s literally nothing in China for me’: Singapore-raised man uncertain after repeated PR rejections

SINGAPORE: A foreign national from China who has lived in Singapore since he was two years old has shared his uncertainty about his future after his family’s applications for permanent residency (PR) were rejected several times over the past decade.

In a recent post on Reddit’s r/askSingapore forum, the man explained that he had grown up in Singapore, with his father holding an Employment Pass (EP), his mother on a Work Permit (WP), and himself on a Student’s Pass.

He said his family had applied for PR together several times over the years, but each application was unsuccessful.

“Our last application was a few months ago, and unfortunately the outcome was the same,” he wrote.

While he acknowledged that securing PR can be difficult, he admitted that he was unsure why his family had not been successful.

“I understand getting PR is hard af, and my parents probably weren’t qualified enough? Not sure how it works,” he said.

The latest rejection also meant he would not be able to serve National Service (NS) alongside many of his friends, something he had previously been looking forward to.

“I was actually looking forward to serving NS together with my friends, but I guess that won’t be the case,” he wrote.

Despite the repeated rejections, however, he said he still has strong feelings for Singapore and hopes to remain here permanently.

“No hard feelings. I still love Singapore and have plans to stay here forever because there’s literally nothing in China for me. Last time I went to China, I felt like a foreigner,” he said.

Now that he has recently graduated from polytechnic, he is trying to figure out his next steps.

“I just graduated from poly recently and am currently looking for a job at the airport that can sponsor my SPASS and to also clear out my 3-year bond with the Ministry of Education (MOE). I’m uncertain about the future on whether or not I’ll get PR,” he wrote, before asking others to share their experiences or offer advice.

‘Apply alone now’

In the comments, several users suggested that the poster try applying for PR on his own first.

One told him, “2008 to now is over 18 years, and if your family application has failed multiple times, as a Chinese person, it likely won’t happen. Speak to your parents and see if they are okay with it if you were to try to apply by yourself as an individual.”

Another commented, “Apply alone now. You have obviously done national exams here, right? The fact that you would immediately have to serve NS would prove your intentions and greatly increase your chances.”

A third added, “Work first, climb the corporate ladder, get a better salary, then apply for PR on your own merit. You got this. Jia you!!”

In other news, a Singaporean woman recently turned to Reddit after discovering that her boyfriend of one year and eight months had spent S$1,400 on games over four months.

Posting on the r/asksg subreddit on Saturday (Aug 15), the woman said she and her boyfriend had already spoken about his spending habits in the past, particularly his tendency to spend money on “games and figurines/merchandise.”
