New AMK MP Jasmin Lau apologises to residents after flyer mix-up

SINGAPORE: Jasmin Lau, the newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Seletar-Serangoon ward at Ang Mo Kio GRC, issued an apology over social media after a flyer meant for residents in her district ended up at Aljunied GRC.

SingPost was immediately informed about the matter, according to a report in 8world earlier this week.

On Wednesday (May 28), Ms Lau posted an update on the misdelivered flyers on her Facebook and Instagram accounts, saying that they had been sent to residents after the May 3 polls to let them know she would be the MP serving them.

“This was necessary as AMK GRC had undergone some internal realignment of boundaries, and we want to inform residents who will be serving them. Unfortunately, Singapore Post delivered the letters erroneously, and some ended up in Aljunied GRC instead,” she wrote.

She also wrote that SingPost would do some service recovery, adding, “Mistakes do happen, and I am glad they have been responsive and cooperative.”

Addressing the residents of Seletar-Serangoon and Aljunied, she apologised for any confusion caused. Ms Lau thanked the friendly Aljunied residents who reached out via email and social media to say hello.

“Glad to have met you online!” she added.

Ms Lau added a statement from SingPost issued on May 27, which reads, “Following our investigation, we discovered that the ad mail was mistakenly distributed randomly across five delivery bases that were not part of the intended selective listing. In total, the wrong distribution covered a span of 32 blocks.”

The MP wrote that the Ang Mo Kio Town Council and SingPost are working to ensure that the letters that should have gone to residents of specific blocks on Hougang Avenue 9 and Hougang Street 91 that had been missed out on would be delivered by the end of the week.

She listed the 32 blocks affected by the misdelivery and added that SingPost has retrieved most of the letters from these blocks.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to resolve this,” the MP added.

8world reported that a resident at Hougang Street 21, which is under Aljunied GRC, had mistakenly received the flyer and reached out to Ms Lau, messaging her on Instagram. The MP replied via direct message to say that she would contact the Town Council regarding the matter.

The report also said that the incident had been confirmed by the Ang Mo Kio Town Council, which stated that it had immediately informed SingPost about the error.

Prior to contesting in this year’s General Election, Ms Lau was a longtime civil servant. Before she tendered her resignation on April 1, she had been a deputy secretary at the Ministry of Health.

On May 3, the slate from the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP), which was composed of Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Darryl David, Nadia Samdin, Ms Lau, and former Aljunied GRC candidate Victor Lye, won handily, receiving nearly 80 per cent of the vote. /TISG
