One mother who reported her daughter’s teacher to the school principal asked in a recent Reddit thread if she was at fault for having done so.

The teacher reportedly asked her daughter, 6, to eat alone during lunchtime, in a separate room, “because she brought ‘smelly foods’.”

A Chinese Reddit user shared a post on the popular subreddit r/AmItheAssh*le on June 13, clearly shocked and upset at how her daughter had been treated and that the little girl seemed to be rejecting Asian food.

“Recently she told me she didn’t want her packed lunches anymore and what to eat what the other kids were eating. She had been not wanting to eat what were her favourite foods and opting for asking for pizza more.”

The mother said she had had the same experience growing up when she “was also targeted by teachers who wouldn’t let me bring shrimp or anything with garlic or onion because they hated the smell.”

The mum, therefore, gave her daughter lunches that did not have a strong smell.

“I was really upset because she is half Chinese but she clearly looks Asian and I felt it was my childhood trauma happening on her,” she added.

However, when she talked to her daughter’s teacher about this, the woman claimed she had never asked the little girl to sit apart at lunch.

But the girl’s best friend and another teacher said otherwise.

The girl’s teacher then “switched stories,” and claimed that she had the girl sit alone while eating a persimmon because “it was distracting the other kids because they thought she was eating a tomato and she didn’t want her distracting the other students by having ‘foreign’ food.”

The mum also claimed that the teacher said she only had the girl eat in another room once, even if her daughter said this happened often.

“She told me specifically of a time she brought tomato egg stir fry and a boy bullying her because it looked like blood and the teacher sending her to eat in the other room rather than telling him to stop.”

She then spoke to the principal about the matter.

However, to add to her troubles, the mum said that her husband, who is white, did not believe it when the daughter said her teacher sent her to eat by herself.

So far, there have been over 1000 comments on the thread, with everyone agreeing that the mum is not the “a**hole” (NTA).  Instead, they slammed the teacher for her racist behaviour.

Other Redditors shared their stories of similar experiences.

Some Redditors also called the husband out for not believing his own daughter.
