Multi-car collision at PIE leaves 10 hospitalised

Singapore ― Ten people were hospitalised after a collision involving multiple vehicles on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) on Monday (Sept 27).

A video uploaded by Facebook page Beh Chia Lor – Singapore Road revealed how the accident happened.

“The truck looks to have swerved violently to avoid a lorry in front, then smashes into vehicles across all three lanes and finally slams into the centre divider,” the post noted.

The scene was captured by a vehicle’s dashboard camera while in the middle lane.

A blue truck was spotted changing lanes from the far most left lane to the right.

A few moments later, smoke could be seen exiting the vehicles that collided.

According to the post, at least one trailer truck, three lories with workers, a motorcycle and two cars were involved in the accident.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed being alerted to the accident at around 8 am along PIE towards Changi, before the Jalan Eunos exit.

Ten people were conveyed to Changi General Hospital, said SCDF.

Three people were also assessed by officers for minor injuries and refused to be taken to the hospital.

“This is why heavy vehicles must keep left and drive slower than a normal car cause when they brake, the gravity force is greater, hope everyone’s ok,” said Facebook user Lim Lim, commenting on the video.

Others highlighted that this was the type of accident difficult to avoid as a vehicle that happened to be nearby.

Netizens also mentioned that speeding trucks along highways were a common occurrence that needed addressing.

“Every day, you can see big lorry and trailer speeding on the second lane, so use more private car to get them,” noted Facebook user Lee Lye Poh.

“Malaysian truck again. Traffic Police, please do something. Malaysian trucks speed in Singapore like a king…at AYE after Jurong town hall especially. They drive so fast to get back to Malaysia,” said Facebook user Putnorfauzy Us. /TISG
