Local employee asks if it’s normal for ‘internships and entry-level jobs in Singapore to offer little to no training’

SINGAPORE: A local employee took to Reddit to ask if it is common for internships or entry-level jobs in Singapore to offer little to no training.

Sharing his experience on the r/askSingapore forum, the man said that during his first week at work, he was immediately given a heavy workload and expected to pick everything up on his own.

He also mentioned that he had to spend additional hours working from home just to catch up, as there was minimal guidance from his colleagues.

To make things worse, he was told that if he could keep up, then perhaps “the job isn’t for him.”

“This statement was told repeatedly to me,” he said. “Is it the norm to have everything thrown at you, and then you swim? Or is it normal for entry level jobs where the people there will teach you one task at a time, then you learn and do as you go along.”

“It depends on your job.”

His post sparked discussion among Redditors, with some users saying his experience is sadly quite common, especially in fast-paced or understaffed workplaces.

One user commented, “Yes, this is real world.” Another wrote, “Truth is companies rarely have time to train you while doing an internship. It’s usually up to who they attach you to as your supervisor.”

A third added, “Some companies might expect you to pick things up quickly because they assume that you’re already equipped with foundational skills from school.”

However, not everyone agreed. One Redditor working in tech said, “It depends on your job. If you need to know some internal systems, there’s usually some training (which also could just be videos).

“I don’t have special on-the-job training for most of my roles as I’m in the tech sector and everything technical is public info. Having knowledge of the technology stack is already a prerequisite to get hired.”

In other news, a polytechnic student has sparked a discussion online after asking if it’s “not normal” in Singapore for students to give part of their internship pay to their parents.

In a post published on the r/SGexams forum, the student shared that she was surprised by her friends’ reactions after revealing she regularly gives $50 each to her mother and father from her monthly internship allowance of around $800.
