The initiative is going to start with a 10-day web development bootcamp in June

A stone’s throw away from Singapore and a few-hours drive from Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian state of Johor has some intriguing advantages as it tries to kickstart its nascent startup ecosystem.

Today, StartupJohor, a local community builder, announced the launch of ‘StartupJohor Academy’, a new initiative to help make starting a business more accessible to Johorians.

The programme is run in conjunction with an RM5 million (US$1.3 million) investment fund called LEAD (League of Extraordinary Developers) and Garuda Robotics, a Singapore-based company that builds SaaS products for the drone industry.

The target audience for the programme is people in Johor who are trying to prepare for a future career in startups. This means helping them gain knowledge in areas such as programming, big data analytics, drone applications and blockchain.

For example, to kickstart, interested parties can sign up for a 10-day full-stack web development bootcamp to start in June.

“Startup Johor Academy will work with industry leading partners to provide high quality training program and educational content to the audience by utilising a learning-by-doing approach and applying it to real business case studies and projects,” said StartupJohor Community Director Feng Lim in a statement.

The academy will be taking place in Iskander Puteri, a town that boasts a fairly new, and intensive, development project right next to Johor’s famous LEGOLAND theme park.
