Exercise is important – not because we all need to have beach-ready bodies, but because our bodies are what allows us to experience this journey called life. A healthy body enjoys the different experiences much better and a fit body allows you to go as far as you want to with less limitations.

Gym and fitness centre memberships can be pricey, so we’ve put together for you a list of places and events where you can try out a bunch of different exercises, for free. Let’s get pumpin’.

Use Meetup.com

These groups are often formed by passionate individuals who are looking for like-minded folks to work out with, or who want to provide an accessible platform for anyone and everyone to stay healthy.

Check out Free Bootcamp Training @ Botanic Gardens, which happens every Sunday at 9am and Wednesday at 6:30pm. Their workout is inspired by Freeletics, a format created in the U.S combining running and high-intensity interval training for a hardcore fat-burning and muscle-building sweat sesh. Intimidated?

Don’t worry – participants are from all walks of life (including couch potatoes!) and the organisers will adjust the training intensity according to your needs.

Using technology to your advantage

There is no shortage of full-length exercise sessions on Youtube and free workout apps.

A popular free app is Sworkit (available on iTunes and Google Play Store). It’s simple to use and totally customisable, whether you’re a fitness buff or an exercise noob. Choose your workout type (strength, cardio, yoga or stretching), the duration of the workout, and then just follow what’s on the screen! It functions offline so you can exercise anywhere, and displays a video of the movement so you know exactly what to do.

On Youtube, look up the Popsugar channel, with tons of full-length videos for dance, cardio, toning and high-intensity circuit workouts.
