My regular insider, ES sent me the following very interesting jobs statistics extracted from a Parliamentary reply on 14 August 2003.

1 foreign job = 9 local jobs?

From 1998 to 2002 – the employment change for locals and foreigners was 93,100 and 8,900 respectively.

This means that for every one foreign job added – nine local jobs were added.

390,300 local jobs vs 534,600 foreign jobs?

In contrast, the jobs growth of 390,300 local jobs from 2007 to 2015, was against an increase in 534,600 foreign jobs.

5 foreign jobs = 4 local jobs?

This means that for every five foreign jobs added – only four local jobs were added.

New citizens & PRs from 2007 – 2015?

Moreover,  the total number of new citizens and PRs granted from 2007 to 2015 was 174,166 and 378,740  respectively.

So, how many of the local jobs actually went to new PRs and citizens?

Looking at the above statistics – is it any wonder that there are so many unemployed and underemployed Singaporeans?
