Workers’ Party: Volunteering with WP doesn’t come with material rewards, yet our volunteers continue to answer the call to serve

SINGAPORE: The Workers’ Party held a very special event over the weekend, a luncheon for the volunteers of the Serangoon ward of Aljunied GRC. The Sunday afternoon (Oct 22) event was attended by three Aljunied MPs, WP chief and Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh, WP chair Sylvia Lim, and Mr Gerald Giam.

“Volunteering with the Workers’ Party does not come with material rewards. Yet time and again, our volunteers continue to answer the call to serve, and do so out of love for their community and their aspirations for a better Singapore,” the WP said in a Facebook post on Sunday night.

“This is evident none more so than in the Serangoon ward of Aljunied GRC, where volunteers have been integral in maintaining critical outreach and grassroots activities – across MPS, community welfare, and grassroots events.”

The WP added that the three MPs thanked the volunteers “for their outstanding volunteering contributions over the years. They serve with sincerity and are truly what makes Serangoon special.”

For the past few months, the WP has been paying special attention to Serangoon, making sure its residents are well taken care of. The WP immediately stepped in to fill the gap Mr Perera left. A few days after Mr Perera stepped down, Ms Lim, who had represented Serangoon from 2011 to 2020 in Parliament, wrote in an Instagram post, “When a GRC MP leaves, the other MPs and the Party step up. As MP formerly overseeing Serangoon division, it was great catching up with old friends. With Pritam, Faisal, Gerald, and Serangoon volunteers. #AljuniedGRC #JiaYou.”

On the same day, Mr Singh wrote in a Facebook post the four remaining MPs (Mr Singh, Ms Lim, Mr Giam, and WP vice chair Mr Faisal Manap) would “jointly oversee the Serangoon ward of Aljunied GRC collectively, including the private residence.” He posted the schedule of Meet-the-People sessions at Serangoon ward, which remained unchanged, and added that residents could also reach out to the MP via email at [email protected].

“All of us will continue the house visits and outreach activity in the HDB and private estates that encompass the Serangoon ward of Aljunied GRC. We are at your service,” wrote the WP chief on July 23.

In August, the WP also held its National Day flag distribution at Serangoon Gardens. /TISG
