The Exorcist: Believer makes $2.9 million in box office previews

On Oct 5, The Exorcist: Believer was previewed in the United States and started off its box office run with $2.85 million. The movie opens 50 years after the first exorcist hit theaters.

Green and Blumhouse are hoping to reinvent the epic horror film in conjunction with Halloween. Universal apparently paid $400 million for the rights to the franchise in 2021. Exorcist Believer is expected to open to $35 million in the United States.

It will also open in more than 40 countries this weekend. To date none of the Exorcist films since 1973 have had that much of an impact but this time around, Ellen Burstyn will reprise her role as Chris MacNeil, whose life has been forever altered by what happened to her daughter Regan 50 years go.

The Exorcist – Riskiest for Blumhouse

The film centers on Victor Fielding played by Leslie Odom Jr whose daughter and her friend become possessed. The two girls’ roles are played by Libya Jewett and Olivia Marcum respectively.

Blumhouse is pegging the project as the riskiest one they have ever made.

Despite the hype and excitement and also the fact that the horror genre has its own legion of fans that are review proof, the reviews have not been very positive. “The film is a grab bag of half-baked ideas that never coalesce into a coherent theme or a reason to exist,” said the AV Club.

The New York Times defines it as, “double the possession, half the fun.” Another critic says it’s the “worst horror film of the year, despite Odom’s brilliance.”

However the Guardian and the Empire have come up with some positive reviews.

The Guardian describes it as serviceable – a silly, gloopy Halloween shocker that offers just about enough goofy entertainment for an undemanding fright night crowd.

The Empire says that this Exorcist sequel is better than all but The Exorcist III, yet still never quite manages to crawl fully under your skin. It also states that the film is a perfectly serviceable horror movie, it at least gets the Exorcist franchise back into respectable territory, but there is potential for something much better.
