Gun control is one of the most divisive topic in American politics. In the latest debate between pro and anti gun control advocates, some Democratic lawmakers are staging a sit-in to demand a vote on gun control legislation.
Former Foreign Minister, and current Home Affairs and Law Minister, Mr K Shanmugam, has commented on this deeply divisive topic of the US politics. Linking a BBC article to his Facebook page, the Minister supporting the pro-gun control camp asked if America is able to provide its people with real safety and security.
Citing statistics from the BBC report, Mr Shanmugam said “it is quite tragic that the country is not able to find a way to control guns from reaching madmen, criminals, terrorists and would be mass murderers.”
Citing another Wall Street Journal article, the Minister added, “so even suspects on terrorism watch lists can buy firearms!”
The Singapore Government has fiercely guarded against foreign interference in local politics.
More recently, commenting on the topic of foreign sponsorships for Pink Dot 2016, one of the Ministry headed by Mr Shanmugam said: “The Government’s general position has always been that foreign entities should not interfere in our domestic issues, especially political issues or controversial social issues with political overtones. These are political, social or moral choices for Singaporeans to decide for ourselves. LGBT issues are one such example.”
