A 45-year-old man with mild intellectual disability has been sentenced to 15 months imprisonment for molesting a 5-year-old girl his sister was babysitting.
The incident happened in June last year in the north-eaastern part of Singapore. The convict, Mohamad Awang’s sister who was babysitting the child, had to visit a relative and so she instructed her daughter to look after the little girl. Awang who lives with his sister, was also in the flat at that time.
Shortly after his niece fell asleep, at about 12.40pm while watching television, Awang went to his room and called the girl into the room. There he made her sit beside him on the bed and molested her.
The niece awoke after about 10 minutes later and called out to the girl when she realised that the child was not in the living room. The girl came running out of the bedroom and told the niece everything that had happened.
The niece promptly informed her mother and the little girl’s mother about the molest.
The girl’s mother made a police report when she noticed that the 5-year-old’s behaviour drastically changed after the incident. The the girl who was usually well-behaved, began to throw tantrums, showed a high level of anxiety and started binge-eating since the molest.
The judge who heard the case emphasised the seriousness of the charges and said that Awang was fortunate to escape caning.
