Netizen asks why SG hasn’t had a Miss Universe winner ‘when our country is a first world nation with first world standards?’ 

This year’s Miss Universe Singapore was crowned earlier this week, in preparation for the 71st Miss Universe pageant next January. Maybe the country will get lucky again in the US, just as it did in 1983, when Singapore had its first semi-finalist.

Perhaps one netizen was thinking along these lines when he asked, “Why haven’t we got a Miss Universe winner when our country is a first-world nation with first-world standards?”

Mr Freddie Tann’s post on the Complaint Singapore Facebook page on Thursday (Oct 20) has received a lot of remarks from other netizens.

But instead of answering Mr Tann’s question directly, a lot of commenters appeared to take issue with his use of the phrase “first-world.”

“With elderly people pushing cardboards on the streets and cleaning tables at hawker centres when they are in their 70’s and 80’s, u still regards our country as first world nation?,” asked one netizen.

 One commenter argued that winning the Miss Universe has nothing to do with a contestant coming from a first-world country, with woman from nations such as Venezuela and the Philippines winning the top spot.

Maybe 2023 will be Singapore’s lucky year, with 22-year-old Carissa Yap, this year’s Miss Universe. Ms Yap is a business student at the National University of Singapore

No doubt that Singaporeans will be rooting for her on January 14, 2023, when she competes at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana in the United States.

Miss Universe Singapore 2021, Nandita Banna, made it to the top 16 in the pageant last year, the first time a candidate from Singapore made it to that far in over 34 years.

The last time this happened was in 1987, the year Singapore hosted the pageant. Local favorite Marion Nicole Teo made it to the top 9.

“It has been a journey of self-discovery and growth the moment I joined and it will only continue from here. It has taught me that growth is not linear but when you look back you will see how far you have progressed ❤️ To my strong and beautiful finalists, I have seen how far each of us has grown and i’m so proud,” wrote Ms Yap in an Instagram post after her win.
