Photos/videos taken by eyewitnesses show fire and thick black smoke coming out of the window from the unit on fire.

The fire left the flat’s interior completely destroyed, with a rabbit’s carcass found among the wreckage, a heartbreaking testament to the devastating incident. Remnants of the fire, such as burnt debris and soot, were visible all the way down from the flat to the ground floor, a stark reminder of the Marsiling Rise fire incident.

Acting prudently in light of the fire, about 80 residents of nearby units were evacuated in an effective HDB flat fire evacuation. A man in his 60s, affected by the smoke, was conveyed to the Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation treatment.

This Marsiling fire underscores the necessity of swift, coordinated responses to ensure the safety of the public during such incidents. The SCDF’s effective response and the successful HDB flat fire evacuation certainly mitigated the potential harm from this incident.

Fire safety and prevention measures

The Marsiling fire serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of fire safety and prevention measures. Homeowners are advised to ensure that electrical appliances are switched off when not in use and to refrain from overloading electrical outlets. Regularly checking and maintaining wiring systems can also help to prevent such incidents.

In high-rise living environments like HDB flats, the evacuation plan should be known to all residents. The SCDF recommends that residents familiarize themselves with the nearest fire exits, fire extinguisher locations, and to not use lifts during a fire.
In the unfortunate event of a fire, residents should call 995 immediately for the Singapore Civil Defence Force response, and evacuate the premises swiftly and safely as part of an HDB flat fire evacuation.
