Singapore — In light of several fires caused by personal mobility devices (PMDs), the government has set up a dedicated task force to look into the incidents and prepare ways to avoid further damage.
The task force consists of the Land Transport Authority (LTA), Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), Housing and Development Board (HDB) and Enterprise Singapore.
The LTA and SCDF, leading the task force, discussed ways to develop and coordinate efforts in order to raise awareness for the UL2272 certification.

The UL2272 certification is a safety standard that aims to reduce the risk of fires and requires all electric scooters to be registered and inspected for safety compliance.
Additionally, all registered electric scooters must undergo inspection by April 1, 2020.
The deadline for users to comply for the certification is July 1, 2020.
The LTA now requires all PMDs such as electric scooters, hover-boards and unicycles sold from July 2019 to follow standards of the certification.
According to a report by Today, the certification “entails a series of electrical, mechanical and environmental tests” for the PMD.
90,000 electric scooters were reportedly registered since last month, but only 10 percent were declared up to the standards of the UL2272 certification. -/TISG
