Pro-family and marriage Facebook group, Singaporeans Defending Marriage & Family (SDMF), has claimed that the controversial Preetipls rap video somehow represents Pink Dot’s alleged agenda to “create DISCORD, SOCIAL DISORDER and RACIAL DISHARMONY” in Singapore, since Preeti and Subhas Nair were Pink Dot’s ambassadors this year.

Days before Singapore celebrates its 54th national day, a discussion on racial relations gripped the nation after a “racially insensitive” advertisement campaign began trending online. The ad for government-led initiative E-Pay featured Chinese actor Dennis Chew dressed as a Chinese man, Chinese woman, Malay woman and an Indian man.

Responding to the video, Preeti Nair – a Singaporean Indian comedian and YouTuber who goes by the name ‘Preetipls’ – released an expletive-laden rap video, calling out the E-pay advertisement featuring the Chinese actor wearing dark makeup or “brownface” to portray an Indian man.

Preeti and her brother, Subhas Nair, not only criticised the advertisement but went on to rail against the Chinese in Singapore and talked about casual racism against minorities in Singapore.

The video drew backlash from the Government and has since been banned in Singapore. The police are investigating the video and the creators of the video, while Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said, “When you use four-letter words, vulgar language, attack another race, put it out in public, we have to draw the line and say not acceptable.”

In a post published last week, SDMF conflated the Preetipls controversy with Pink Dot. The anti-LGBT group claimed:

“This tells you a lot what Pink Dot is all about – Create DISCORD, SOCIAL DISORDER and RACIAL DISHARMONY. Pink Dot Ambassadors Preeti & Subhas Nair – Created racist offensive vulgar rap videos to denigrate and insult Chinese people.
“Then after being rightly told off by Law Minister Shanmugam, and police investigation into their video, these 2 made a “mocked, insincere apology”. Would Leopards change it’s spots?
“MHA should send a clear message to Leftist activists like them to stop playing the race and victim card, and using IDENTITY politics to incite disharmony.”

SDMF has been quite a vocal anti-LGBT proponent in the past, frequently speaking out against Singapore’s pride movement Pink Dot.

The group has also made headlines for urging fellow Singaporeans to boycott companies that support Pink Dot, for protesting former US President Barack Obama from visiting Singapore since he is a “marxist socialist,” and for protesting gory Halloween decorations installed downtown.

Interestingly, just last year the administrators of SDMF sought forgiveness from members of the LGBT community for possibly hurting or offending them with their “unhelpful and often insensitive” remarks.

SDMF made a “sincere” apology to those “struggling with same-sex attraction”. Adding that it is yearning to “learn and grow to be able to walk with you more effectively in your journey,” the group wrote:

“To many who are out there struggling with same-sex attraction, gender confusion, any sin, any weakness, failure or addictive behaviour, trying to make sense of what you are going through and we hurt, frustrated and offended you with our unhelpful and often insensitive response, we sincerely apologise and ask for your forgiveness…

“We are deeply sorry. We have much to learn. We need and want to learn and grow to be able to walk with you more effectively in your journey..

“True and real love is learning also to respond in a helpful and useful way to those who are struggling and trying to make sense of what they are experiencing…”

Curiously, just a day before publishing this apology, SDMF wrote in a separate post:

“If we really care about the LGBT community, we should realise that homosexuality was a psychological disorder in APA’s DSM before LGBT activists politically manipulated APA to have it removed in 1973 and it was never based on conclusive scientific research…

“To support Pink Dot and the Sexual Rights Agenda with or without realising this important historical fact is depriving the LGBT community of their right to know that it had been a psychological disorder and they have a right to know that they can be treated.”

To put it in SDMF’s own terms, would a leopard change its spots?
