Texas man wants to spend his golden years at the Holiday Inn

“When I reach that golden age, I’ll face it with a grin.”

Terry Robinson shared a post on Facebook that went viral. In the post, he explained how it would be much better and cheaper to spend his senior years in a Holiday Inn rather than in a nursing home.

“It takes months to get into decent nursing homes. Holiday Inn will take your reservation today,” said Robinson.

The cost of living in a US nursing home can reach up to US$188 (S$253.27) a day. A 2018 report says that some nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the US now cost U$100,000 (S$ 134,720) per year and expenses are still on the rise.

Robinson listed a breakdown of the costs and benefits of checking into a Holiday Inn in Texas. Considering long-term stay and senior discounts, he would spend U$59.23 (S$79) per night inclusive of breakfast and use of the hotel’s amenities such as the spa, pool, gym, and lounge.

He added that there was no need to worry if anything in his room needed repairs. “TV broken? Light bulbs need changing? Need a mattress replaced? No problem. They fix everything and apologize for the inconvenience.”

He is still left with an ample amount of U$128.77 (S$173.48) every day to spend on lunch, dinner, and entertainment. He can give the remaining U$5 (S$6.74) as tips, so the staff will be more than eager to help him.

“They treat you like a customer, not a patient,” Robinson said his post.

His health insurance would pay if he suffers from any illnesses or injuries while staying at the Holiday Inn, and he might even get upgraded to a luxurious suite.

Family would also look forward to visiting him and perhaps “check in for a few days mini-vacation.”

The cost of living in elderly care homes in Singapore could range from S$1,200 to S$3,500 per month. The government can subsidize the fees, but the costs also varies depending on the type of medical care the senior needs.
