M’sian Minister Yeo Bee Yin to wed property developer Lee Yeow Seng next month

Yeo Bee Yin, Malaysia’s Energy, Science, Technology, Climate Change and Environment Minister, is tying the knot with Lee Yeow Seng, a property developer, next month.

Invitations to their wedding have already been sent out to the couple’s relatives and friends, as well as businesspersons and political figures in their milieu. The couple’s reception dinner is to be held at Le Meridien Putrajaya.

It is slated to be one of the biggest weddings in Malaysia this year, with Taiwan-based Malaysian singers Fish Leong and Michael Wong expected to perform at the event.

Yeo is a member of Malaysia’s Democratic Action Party (DAP) which is a part of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) ruling coalition.

She is currently a Member of Parliament for Bakri in Johor, and also served as a Member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly for the Damansara Utama state seat from 2013 to 2018.

She was appointed as Minister of Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment on July 2, 2018, which was later renamed as Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC).

Yeo is a graduate of Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), and has a First Class Honors in Chemical Engineering under the Petronas Scholarship.

She worked for two years with French oilfield services and equipment company Schlumberger. She also has an advanced degree in Chemical Engineering at University of Cambridge under Gates Cambridge Scholarship by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and a Masters in Philosophy in Advanced Chemical Engineering with a Commendation.

As MESTECC’s minister, she has vowed to increase Malaysia’s renewable energy goals from 2% to 20% by 2030, and has spearheaded the refurbishing of government buildings to maximize the consumption of energy effectively.

She has also assisted with the nationwide ban on importing plastic waste, and has set out a 12 year roadmap for the elimination of single use plastics in the country by 2030.

Her initiatives to preserve the environment have gained her recognition from the British multidisciplinary scientific journal, Nature.

Yeo’s fiancé, IOI Properties Group chief executive, Lee Yeow Seng, is the youngest son of tycoon Lee Shin Cheng, executive chairman of IOI Corporation Berhad.

Earlier this month, the Malaysian simply laughed off questions about her impending nuptials. The Straits Times reported that on February 2, when Yeo was asked by the press if she’s getting married, she laughed and said, “I don’t know about this.”

Later on she added, “No comments on personal major life events.”

Speculation about the minister getting married began to circulate when an anonymous family friend of Yeo claimed that her wedding date was set for the end of next month.

Yeo, age 36, and Lee, 40, emerged as a couple in December, when one of the Minister’s friends posted a photo of himself with the two. The friend captioned the photo with this: “Warning: This photo will make many guys cry. Yeo Bee Yin just introduced her special boyfriend to me.”
