X users fear for Ireland’s proposed “thoughtcrime” law, conservatives claim saved memes can land you in jail 

Apparently there is a new proposed form of punishment for people who are extreme, which is a new “thoughtcrime” law. X users feel that this will be taking the right to freedom of thought and speech away. Furthermore, this law was proposed by Ireland a few months ago, and users are still talking about it.  

The Irish government is pushing for a law that could lead to arrests and imprisonment for ‘hate speech’ without explicitly saying or writing anything ‘hateful’. The new Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences) Bill, currently in progress, is alarmingly authoritarian. It targets communication that might ‘incite hatred’ against certain characteristics, with ‘inciting hatred’ often equating to causing offense. This could result in up to five years’ imprisonment.

It goes further, criminalizing the ‘preparation or possession’ of material likely to ‘incite hatred’, punishable by two years in jail. ‘Possession’ could merely involve having offensive content saved on personal devices. The bill presumes stored material is not for personal use, putting the burden of proof on the individual.

Following that, refusal to provide passwords could result in fines or a year in jail. This law appears aimed at silencing dissenting views, echoing Orwell’s ‘thoughtcrime’ by discouraging unpopular beliefs, contradicting the recent repeal of Ireland’s blasphemy laws. This law could stifle legitimate debate and potentially criminalize private actions, yet it has largely evaded public scrutiny.

Conservative pages on X are discussing the seriousness of this problem. One of the pages state that it is unimaginable going to literal prison for being funny. Is this the future of the ultra liberal society? At the same time, another looming concern is growing, which is the ultra right wing conservatives.

In addition to this, there are discussions on free speech. An X user states that hate speech is just free speech that someone disagrees with. However, another user appears to disagree with this statement. 

It’s a law if passed that is a declaration of war upon the Irish people and the Irish people need to wake up to this fact very quick before Ireland is lost.

Others state that this law is an “evil” law that forces the crackdown of private information. Refusing to give up your passwords could also result in significant punishment which many find unfair.
