SINGAPORE: The Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHC) has launched a new handbook on supporting employee mental health. Developed by the tripartite working group of the Mental Health Committee under the Council, the handbook aims to guide companies in creating supportive, inclusive, and mentally healthy workplaces.
The working group conducted a public consultation last year to gather opinions from the community and held extensive discussions with employers, trade unions, human resources practitioners, social service agencies, mental health professionals, and employees. Feedback from these sessions shaped the final recommendations featured in the handbook.
The manual’s recommendations are centred on fostering a positive workplace culture, establishing effective support systems, and helping employees who have recovered from mental health conditions return to work with confidence.
It also features successful case studies from local businesses that have implemented supportive mental health practices, providing real-world examples for other companies to reference and adapt.
According to the WSHC, the handbook is an important step towards promoting a workplace environment that prioritises mental well-being. A safe and supportive working environment not only helps employees feel valued but also enhances team cohesion, boosts employee retention, and improves overall organisational performance.
Businesses are encouraged to voluntarily and flexibly adopt the handbook’s recommendations. The WSHC added that companies can seek further assistance if they require additional guidance on implementing the measures.
