Although jaywalking incidents typically involve pedestrians crossing the road at the wrong place, a woman was spotted walking leisurely in the middle of the road and looking at her phone while a vehicle waited behind her.

“Saw this woman walking in the middle of a two-lane road,” wrote Facebook page ROADS.sg on Monday (Apr 11).

The woman appeared to have no intention of crossing the road but walking in the middle of it as cars passed by.

“Looking at her phone like she is at some shopping mall. What’s with these blatant jaywalkers,” added ROADS.sg.

As the woman took her time walking in the middle of the road, two cars had to slow down behind her.

It appears that she finally decided to head to the other side of the road before the video ended.

Members from the online community shared personal experiences with jaywalkers.

Here are some accounts from netizens:

“Saw one recently holding her kid like that. I shouted at them. The mum asks the kid to go onto the pavement, and she carries on,” said Facebook user Jimmy Chua.

“Lol… that day I saw someone walking on expressway… what is wrong with these people?” asked Facebook user Nazimah Aziz.

Meanwhile, another netizen highlighted that the zebra crossing was nearby and easily accessible for the woman, even though “it was her grandfather’s road,” according to other comments.

According to Singapore Criminal Lawyer’s website, jaywalking is one of Singapore’s most common offences committed.

Jaywalkers can be fined S$20 on the spot and charged in court. First-time offenders can be sentenced to up to three months in jail and fined up to S$1,000. The punishment is doubled for repeat offenders. /TISG
