Will Smith effect spreading to more and more uncles, from fighting in gyms, hawker centres, to even in their own homes

Another day, another video was uploaded of men of a certain age getting into arguments. It’s bad enough when they merely engage in shouting matches, but some of the fights end up as out-and-out brawls.

It can’t just be the Will Smith effect, because the week began with a bloody fight of at least 15 uncles at Hougang coffeeshop, with one man ending up getting hospitalised.

And then, by the end of the week—just like that—three fights were uploaded on the Singapore Incidents page in quick succession on Friday (Apr 1).

Round 1! Fight!

The first, and most violent, was a dust-up between unmasked men at a hawker centre, which was caught on the eatery’s CCTV cam.

A man in a black v-neck shirt was suddenly confronted, slightly off-cam, by another man in a grey cap and a white shirt.

They come to blows very quickly, and the man in black falls to the ground.

Discontented with his opponent falling, the man in white continues to hit the other man even while he’s on the floor, at one point even dragging him by the foot, so he can have a clearer space to fight him.

The man in white continues to rain blows on the other man’s head and face, and the man in black ends up with a bloody nose.

He continues to hit his opponent, even when the head of the man in black is already almost under a chair. It seemed like the man in black could do nothing but hold on to the hem of the other guy’s shirt.

The man in white may have gone on hitting the other man, had it not been for three people—two men and a woman—stepping in to separate the two.

One of the men who broke up the fight led the man in white away, while the woman helped the man in black.

Round 2! Fight!

The second fight took place at Bedok SportsHub. Thankfully, this time the two angry uncles did not actually get into a physical brawl, possibly because they were surrounded by a group of others, made up of both men and women, who tried to calm the two down.

But they do come pretty close to fisticuffs, as one man, the more aggressive of the pair, can be heard shouting vulgarities at the other and seen pointing his finger in the other man’s face and coming really close, despite the presence of others who tried to hold him off. Screen Shot 2022 04 02 at 12.55.22 PM

The other man seemed to remain creatively calm, and by the end of the one-minute video, the other people around them succeeded in putting distance between the men.

Round 3! Fight!

The third fight took place in one of the men’s homes at an HDB block. Fortunately, the men were separated by an iron gate, but this did not stop them from yelling loudly at each other in Hokkien, insulting each other, cursing each other, and challenging each other to a one-on-one fight and a taste of each other’s fists.

A portion of their exchange can be seen here:
