What did Samsung fix in the redesigned Galaxy Fold?

After the disastrous and embarrassing launch of the Samsung Galaxy Fold last April, the South Korean tech giant announced that they are recalling the device to fix key issues.

On Sept 2018, a mere five months after the initial launch, Samsung will be releasing the new Galaxy Fold in Singapore.

Users are anticipating the release of the new phone with many crossing their fingers that the redesigned Galaxy Fold is now wrinkle-free.

So, what can users expect from the redesign?

Samsung has now extended the thin protective layer on the screen of the phone to cover the entire inner surface, making it barely noticeable.

Last April, confused users mistakenly removed the plastic layer and unknowingly broke their device.

The phone now folds with a sleek book-like hinge, making the fold feel more reinforced and integrated with the entire device.

There are also small plastic caps atop the screen’s hinge to prevent dust and other foreign elements from entering the screen.

Samsung claims the redesigned Galaxy Fold can withstand more than 200,000 folding and unfolding actions.

The Galaxy Fold has a 4.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED on its front screen as well as a foldable 7.3-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED display when opened, a combo of a smartphone and tablet in one device.

Samsung also boasts of the Galaxy Fold’s Multi-Active Window feature which allows the simultaneous use of three active apps when the device is unfolded.

The App Continuity feature also allows a seamless transition between the small to the large screen when shooting a video, watching a movie, or using any app on the device.

The 5G-ready Samsung Galaxy Fold is also the world’s first mobile device with six cameras. At the back, there is a 16 megapixel lens coupled with a pair of 12 MP lenses. The front camera has 10 MP perfect for selfies, while a dual-lens 10MP and 8MP on the inner screen caps it all off.

However, initial reviewers commented on the not-so-inconspicuous crease on the screen marking the fold as well as the lack of a headphone jack and microSD slot.

Will Samsung get back into the fold with its redesign?

The Samsung Galaxy Fold, priced at a hefty S$3,088, will be released in Singapore on Sept 18 and is available in two colours./TISG
