Singapore ― After a video of Amy Khor sleeping in Parliament went viral over the weekend, one netizen commented that Singaporeans then understood why it took so long before Parliamentary sessions were live-streamed.

Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Amy Khor was caught on camera snoozing in Parliament, in a 20-second clip. The video, shared by one Philip Ang on Facebook on Friday (Sept 17) garnered almost 500 shares and 283 reactions.

He captioned the video: “Thanks to MP Amy Khor, Singaporeans have begun to understand why PAP had refused to live stream Parliament”.

Mr Ang’s post also led to other photos of Members of Parliament (MPs) ‘closing their eyes’ in Parliament or yawning.

According to an online survey done earlier this year, to which more than 1,500 netizens responded, 96 per cent of them voted that Members of Parliament (MPs) who sleep on the job should receive harsher punishments.

The survey, published on the Facebook page ‘Wake up, Singapore’, asked, ‘Should MPs and Ministers who sleep on the job face tougher punishments?’.

Out of those polled, 1,400 agreed that MPs should face harsher punishments for sleeping on the job, while 57 disagreed.

A video of Minister Chan Chun Sing appearing to fall asleep during a parliamentary session earlier this year also went viral.

In the 6-second-long clip, the Trade and Industry Minister appeared to be dozing off, earning him the ire of many netizens.

The video was taken on Tuesday (Feb 18), during the unveiling of the 2020 Budget by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat.

In the comments section of the video, netizens also shared a screenshot from the 2014 Budget reading where Minister Chan was looking down and appeared to have his eyes closed. /TISG
