Survey reveals local companies have lost millions in cyberattacks

SINGAPORE: According to a recent survey conducted by Cloudflare, a leading intelligent cloud service platform, more than 80 per cent of local companies interviewed have fallen victim to cyberattacks over the past year.

The attacks were primarily attributed to phishing scams and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, leading to substantial financial losses amounting to millions of dollars.

Cloudflare’s survey encompassed a comprehensive study involving over 4,000 leaders from various sectors, including business, construction and real estate, education, energy, finance, and medical care. The results shed light on the widespread nature of cyberattacks affecting organizations of all sizes.

The survey findings reveal that the impact of cyberattacks extends beyond financial losses, significantly disrupting business operations. Nearly 40 per cent of the respondents indicated that their companies had implemented measures such as reducing flexible office models, suspending operations, or postponing expansion plans in response to these incidents.

Furthermore, 37 per cent of the companies reported the attacks to relevant authorities after experiencing a cyber assault.

Alarmingly, 46 per cent of the surveyed companies reported a cumulative loss of at least US$2 million due to cyberattacks over the past 12 months. Despite the magnitude of these losses, only 27 per cent of respondents expressed confidence in their organizations’ capabilities to combat cyber threats effectively.

The prevalence of phishing scams and DDoS attacks highlights the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals. Phishing scams involve deceptive tactics aimed at tricking individuals into revealing sensitive information, whereas DDoS attacks overwhelm a company’s online infrastructure, rendering it inaccessible to legitimate users.

These cyberattacks have far-reaching consequences, impacting the targeted companies and the broader economy. The need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and increased vigilance in the face of evolving threats has become evident.

In light of these findings, experts emphasize the importance of robust cybersecurity strategies and adopting proactive measures to mitigate cyberattack risks. Organizations are encouraged to invest in comprehensive cybersecurity training for employees, strengthen network security systems, and remain updated on the latest cybersecurity threats and solutions.

Addressing the growing cyber threat landscape requires collaboration between the private sector, government agencies, and relevant authorities. By fostering partnerships and sharing best practices, it is possible to create a safer digital environment for businesses and individuals alike.

As cyberattacks continue to evolve and pose significant challenges to organizations worldwide, it is crucial for companies to prioritize cybersecurity as an integral part of their operations. Only by doing so can they fortify their defences and minimize the potential damage caused by cybercriminals.

Cloudflare’s survey serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for collective action to combat cyber threats effectively.
