Steelworker tears in gratitude as President Trump brings back 500 jobs at steel mill in Illinois

President Donald Trump last week pointed to the US Steel plant’s reopening as a success story after he slapped tariffs on imported steel and aluminium last spring. “America never surrenders,” Trump said in an address to workers at the company’s steel coil warehouse in Granite City. “We don’t wave the white flag.”

Trump said: “Our steel towns became ghost towns” and the US engaged in “the worst trade deals ever made in history.”

In saying how his Administration is now negotiating better terms, he added: “After years of shutdowns and cutbacks, today the blast furnace here in Granite City is blazing bright, workers are back on the job and we are once again pouring new American steel into the spine of our country.”

The reopening of the steel mill in Granite City brought back 500 jobs to generations of steelworkers. It especially brought evoked strong emotions in one steelworker who had been laid off for over 2 years since the closure of the mill.

Responding to President Trump’s speech on the reopening of the mill, the steelworker identified as Tony said between sobs: “It’s nice to know that we’ve got someone fighting for us to keep our jobs. It was rough for a lot of us.”
