A netizen who worked as a rider for GrabFood wrote that he dreaded attending a family event because of relatives who look down on him.
In an anonymous post to popular confessions page SGWhispers, the netizen wrote that he had to attend a 5-day family event (funeral) with his relatives present. The netizen added: “It’s just the 3rd day and I felt (sic) awful”.
He added that because he worked as a GrabFood rider, cycling to deliver food, his family relatives felt he was a disgrace.
“Most of my generation are younger than me but are doing better at work, or at least have a ‘proper’ job and have the desired ‘people skills’. (Knowing when to pull the chair, bring the items, say appropriate things… etc. Apparently these are ‘basic skills’… But I just don’t have them. Am Socially awkward)”, the netizen wrote in their post. They added that these were things he gleaned from the conversations of his older relatives.
The netizen shared that during the funeral, he was expected to stay the night. While he did not mind, his relatives pushed the task to him because they said he was “the free one”.
“I am not ‘free’, if I don’t work, I don’t get money. But to me it’s just a choice of money over helping the family out. Staying up all 5 days is very very tiring and I rather they get to rest as much as possible. None of the rest of the relatives are willing to help stay the night, even during the weekends”, the netizen wrote, explaining his reason for helping out and deciding to stay up.
The netizen added that his relatives would often mock him in front of his father, which caused his family some problems. Because of this, his father would ask him to buy drinks and snacks for the rest daily, setting him back some $20 to $30 each time.
Rather frustrated, the netizen said that his relatives in Singapore did not help much at the funeral, mainly came there to “mark attendance”, chat and eat and drink.
Those who commented on the post gave high praise to the netizen.
