National Geographic tags Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, Malaysia, netizens retaliate with mislabeled locations

It appears that some people are still unaware of Singapore’s exact location, including big names such as the National Geographic United Kingdom (Nat Geo UK), which tagged Gardens by the Bay in Malaysia.

The error was posted online for the world to see on Saturday (Aug 27) on Nat Geo’s official Facebook account.

The post reads, “From the Archive: A family from India walks through the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, Malaysia.”

One would expect Nat Geo to be more educated on the world map, given it’s a publication centred around geography.

To date, the error has not been corrected.

Meanwhile, the mishap has sparked over 5,600 comments from netizens who jumped on the opportunity to give their own mislabelled locations.

Take MGAG, who wrote, “From the Archive: Spiderman climbing up the Avengers Tower, New York City, Malaysia.” Talk about hitting multiple mistakes in one sentence.

“From the Archive: A beautiful view of the Big Ben in New York, UK,” added Facebook user Justin Jozy Oh.

Netizen Paul Tan gave the publication the benefit of the doubt and explained that “It’s National Geographic, not National Geography.”

Others wondered why such a blunder could be made when it’s been over half a century since Singapore gained its independence from Malaysia.

Even Tourism Malaysia’s official account corrected Nat Geo UK and said the photo was in Singapore.

Meanwhile, GSC got creative and said that an IMAX theatre was located in Wakanda, Johor Bahru.

This is not the first time Singapore landmarks were tagged incorrectly, triggering the online community and their witty reactions.

An American said the Marina Bay Sands was located in Tennessee, United States, which sparked a flood of memes from netizens, including Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan Jin, who commented, “You have to read all the comments. We all know that’s not Downtown Chattanooga! What’s he smoking?”

“It’s the Starship Enterprise in a Galaxy Far Far Away,” he added./TISG
