Singapore—A woman was caught on a dashcam running into traffic and then sitting on the bonnet of a car, leading people to wonder if she’s troubled and in need of help, or if she’s taking part  in an accident insurance scam.

The video, uploaded on the SG Road Vigilante – SGRV Facebook and YouTube pages last Sunday, shows an incident that is said to have happened at 8:10pm the day before in Loyang Avenue.

Amid considerable, although thankfully slow-moving traffic, a masked woman in a blue shirt and khaki shorts who had been walking on one side of the center island suddenly comes over.

She then sits on the bonnet of a car that was in the rightmost lane.

However, after a second or so, she gets up again.

She can then be seen walking away in the middle of the road.

The caption on the post reads, “Pedestrian dash on to the road & sit on camcar bonnet…Beware of this women when u drive along loyang avenue.”

One commenter said he had encountered her doing the same thing just recently.

Others seemed to feel that she was part of an insurance scam.

Several netizens wondered if  she may be suffering from mental health problems and  be in need of help.

However, if she is a hood or bonnet jumper — that is, if she is deliberately bumping into a car hoping to get  financial compensation — she wouldn’t be the first to try this  tactic in Singapore.

In 2018, a man was caught on camera trying to jump on three different moving cars in a similar iscam attempt.   And in 2017, another man was arrested for throwing himself at a moving vehicle on purpose in Pasir Ris Farmway 2.

The incident was also caught on camera by the driver, a man named Terry Loo. Mr Loo uploaded the video on Facebook.

The police picked up the 35-year-old hood jumper, who was drunk at the time of the incident.

Similar incidents have also happened in 2015 and 2016, according to an AsiaOne report, when two elderly men took part  in a “please-hit-me”  scam. This type of scam also happens in other countries, as seen in the video below.

In the Philippines, it was listed as one of the four most common types of car insurance scams in 2018./TISG
