We Need to Tax “Lazy Wealth”

One of the highlights of the Bloomberg New Economy Gala, which was held in Singapore on 17 Nov 2021, was an interview given by our Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong to John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Chief of Bloomberg News.

The entire crux of that interview was the fact that Mr Lee made the point that it would not be easy to implement a wealth tax and that our tax system needed to be progressive and fair. More on the interview can be found here.

In a land that is starved of national heroes, Loh Kean Yew is a Godsend. The boy (yes, I like to call him that) has done for Singapore what nobody has done since Joseph Schooling stormed into the pool in Rio, beat his idol Michael Phelps and broke the Olympic record in the 100 metres butterfly race.

It has taken Singapore five years to celebrate another hero. Loh did it with not just killer shots but also with his boyish charm and humility. And we have a world champion in the almost forgotten sport of badminton.

Everyone wants to be a success. If you look through any given bookshop, you’ll find that the section on how to be a success takes up a good portion of the store. An entire industry has grown around telling people how to be successful.

I remember having a former client who gave up an electronics store that had been in the family for generations so that they could move into the “Holistic Books Business.” The reason for this change was, as one of the members of this family explained – “Have you noticed that every motivational speaker is a multimillionaire?”

Singapore — In the wake of the hot mess triggered by Mandopop star Wang Leehom’s divorce from Lee Jinglei, it is the ex-wife who’s been earning praise from many netizens, particularly women.

Lee, 35, who is 10 years younger than Wang, is not in show business, but she is no pushover. Educated at Princeton, she earned a doctorate at Columbia University and once worked at JP Morgan as a financial analyst.
