“Every Singaporean deserves a place in our society” — Lawrence Wong on identity & tribalism

 

Singapore — Finance Minister Lawrence Wong tackled the question of identity in society on Tuesday (Nov 23), saying that the concerns different groups have should be heard and not dismissed.

In his keynote speech at a conference on identity organised by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Mr Wong noted that the tribalism and identity politics that have arisen in the west could also do so in Singapore.

Surge in Vaccinated Travel Lane applications causes ICA website to crash for hours

Singapore — The Immigrations and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) experienced a surge in applications by those who wish to travel under the Vaccinated Travel Lanes (VTLs), specifically from Singapore neighbours Malaysia and Indonesia.

On Monday (Nov 22) at 10 am, applications for VTLs for Malaysia and Indonesia opened, allowing short-term visitors and long-term pass holders to enter the country.

SAF captain found guilty of rash act in death of NSF in Bionix Infantry Fighting Vehicle accident

Singapore — Thirty-year-old Ong Lin Jie was convicted on Monday (Nov 22) of a rash act linked to the death of a full-time national serviceman (NSF) Liu Kai three years ago.

Liu Kai, 22, who was later posthumously promoted to Corporal First Class (CFC), was pinned to death in a Land Rover by a Bionix Infantry Fighting Vehicle on Nov 3, 2018.

S’porean taxi driver takes detour to return lost phone & earpiece to his passengers

Singapore — A Singaporean taxi driver made two detours to return a lost cellular phone and an earpiece to his two previous passengers.

A passenger of the taxi driver shared the experience on Sunday (Nov 21) via the Instagram account of @Sgfollowsall, who made a detour after asking for permission to return a lost phone to its rightful owner.

Two teenage girls missing since Nov 11, police appeal for information

Singapore — The Singapore Police Force appealed on Sunday afternoon (Nov 21) for information regarding the whereabouts of two teenage girls who have been missing for over ten days.

Ms Nur Atiqah Binte Mohd Nizam, 19, and Ms Nurain Binte Abdullah, 18, were last seen near Springleaf Avenue on Nov 11, at around 8:15 pm.
