Rising food cost is a hot topic on social media, with customers complaining about the effects of inflation on meal prices and portions.

However, it appears that for a Malaysian man, economy rice meals in Singapore are still cheaper than in Johor Bahru, even after currency conversions.

China Press reported that the man shared a photo of his cai png in a Facebook group, noting it only cost him S$2.70 (RM11) for the meal consisting of rice, tofu, and meat.

He said he would eat in Singapore before returning home to save on costs.

The man also asked if others were like him and would eat before heading back to Johor Bahru after work.

Netizens agreed that the same meals in Malaysia would be about 30 per cent more expensive, costing around RM12 (S$3.55).

A netizen shared a photo of his takeaway, consisting of veggies and rice, which cost RM13 (S$3.84).

Consumers often compare the S$1 to RM3 conversion between the two currencies and the corresponding cost of commodities in Singapore and Malaysia, with many noting that things were cheaper in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, others highlighted that it has become challenging to find cai png in Singapore, similar to the S$2.70 meal the man purchased.

Take this man, for example, who purchased his economy rice with fish from an Ang Mo Kio hawker centre and paid S$11 for the meal.
