Malaysia shines as regional leader at 47th ASEAN summit

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia was commended by political commentators for effectively holding the 47th ASEAN summit. It represented regional impartiality and collective advancement, according to Universiti Teknologi MARA senior lecturer, Dr Muhamad Fuad Abdul Karim.

The signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Thailand and Cambodia, and the historic admission of Timor-Leste as ASEAN’s 11th member, were among the summit’s major accomplishments. These were viewed by political analysts as indicators of regional unity and authentic peacemaking.

The next challenge, according to Dr Fuad, is implementing these arrangements, ensuring economic integration and technological collaboration. He recommended that Malaysian businesses such as Petronas play a significant role in backing up development schemes in less developed ASEAN countries.

Global spotlight: Trump’s attendance boosts ASEAN’s profile

US President Donald Trump’s attendance enhanced ASEAN’s international prominence.

“Trump is like an influencer for ASEAN,” Dr Muhamad Fuad jested and added that the earnest response Trump received demonstrated Southeast Asia’s political maturity and its capacity for cultural inclusivity.

According to Professor Dr Farha Abdol Ghapar from Universiti Poly-Tech Malaysia, Malaysia must be commended for its smooth coordination of the summit. The professor noted that everything went flawlessly despite the pessimism and air of disapproval preceding it. He attributed the smooth proceedings to the Prime Minister’s quiet leadership and robust organisational initiatives.

Economic gains and a stronger ASEAN voice

Experts were also cognisant of the summit’s economic outcomes. Dr Muhamad Azwan Abd Rahman of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia highlighted the country’s balanced outcomes in two-pronged discussions with the United States, covering the advancement in the semiconductor industry and the retention of tariffs under 19% on over 1,700 goods.

Datuk Prof Dr Mohd Faiz Abdullah, chairman of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia, labelled the conference as a huge success. He underscored that Malaysia’s success was not only in the area of logistics but was also a feat in strategy, strengthening ASEAN’s voice as the world’s fourth-largest economy.

“Malaysia may not have won everything,” Dr Azwan echoed, but it established effective international relations, flexibility, resilience, and a stable pledge to building a unified, consistent, and forward-looking ASEAN, he said.
