SINGAPORE: In a heartwarming post just in time for the holiday season, one migrant domestic worker (MDW) has offered a powerful reminder of the value of kindness towards helpers, and it’s resonating deeply.
“As an MDW myself, I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to all EMPLOYERS who treat us with empathy, compassion, and consideration,” she began in her Facebook tribute on the MDW in Singapore (working conditions forum) group. “It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind, but I know that for many of you, we’re not just helpers—we’re part of your families,” she added.
With Christmas fast approaching, the heartfelt appreciation from MDW Bella Marina, from the Philippines, gently reminds us about the human spirit behind the celebrations as she paints a picture of employers who go beyond their job descriptions, not just paying wages but paying attention.
“I’ve heard about employers who go above and beyond to make their MDWs feel valued and appreciated. From celebrating birthdays to offering a listening ear during tough times, your kindness doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s the little things that make a big difference—a simple ‘thank you,’ a genuine smile, a moment of understanding,” she expressed her heartfelt gratitude.
In Singapore, where more than 250,000 MDWs are part of the workforce, many spend years, if not decades, away from their families. And for some, the only “Christmas” they’ll experience comes in the form of a kind gesture from their employer. “We know that being away from our own families is never easy, but your empathy makes the distance a little more bearable,” she said.
“Your compassion reminds us that we’re not alone, and your consideration creates a sense of belonging that we cherish. It’s not just about the salary; it’s about the human connection. It’s about recognising our worth, acknowledging our hard work, and treating us with the dignity we deserve. To those employers who embody these qualities, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You are making a difference in our lives, and your kindness will never be forgotten. *TO MY EMPLOYERS-THANK YOU SO MUCH* 🙏🏻,” she ends her tribute with much appreciation towards her own employer as well.
As Singaporeans begin wrapping gifts, hanging up fairy lights, and counting down to the holidays, maybe it’s worth adding one more thing to the Christmas list: A thank-you note, a day off, or simply a moment of heartfelt appreciation to the helper who keeps the household running.
After all, isn’t that what the season is truly about?
