To prepare for their roles as Priscilla and Elvis Presley, Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi received valuable guidance from Priscilla herself.
Sofia Coppola’s upcoming intimate drama, “Priscilla” (in theaters on Nov. 3), delves into the courtship and marriage of the famous pair, spanning from their initial encounter in 1959 to their eventual separation in the early 1970s. Priscilla Presley, a 14-year-old high school student living in West Germany, met the 24-year-old U.S. soldier Elvis Presley.
In an interview for EW’s Around the Table video series, Coppola, Spaeny, and Elordi shared the insights they gained from Priscilla Presley, including anecdotes about her experiences, such as applying fake eyelashes while in labor with her first child and Elvis Presley’s preference for heavily cooked bacon.
Elordi enjoyed bacon
According to Coppola, Priscilla told them that Elvis enjoyed his bacon really crispy. Elordi humorously chimed in, “I was eating about a pound of bacon a day, but it didn’t show much because I’m quite tall.” He added that it was his heaviest.
While Elvis Presley has been depicted in numerous ways in pop culture, “Priscilla” offers a more in-depth exploration of his relationship with his ex-wife, shedding light on some of the less well-known and more challenging aspects of their bond. Coppola, inspired by Priscilla Presley’s candid memoir “Elvis & Me,” noted how little was known about her, considering their iconic status as a famous couple. She was impressed by Priscilla Presley’s willingness to reveal the details of her life and her experience of growing up in the extravagant setting of Graceland, finding it surprisingly relatable.
Insight into Elvis’ life
Coppola, Spaeny, and Elordi also had access to Elvis Presley’s home videos and photos, which allowed them to understand the real people behind the public image. Elordi explained that the most helpful aspect was separating the mythology from the real person and exploring less-documented aspects of Elvis Presley’s life behind closed doors to make their portrayals more grounded and human.
Their attention to detail extended to the film’s sets. Coppola mentioned that the production designer meticulously reconstructed parts of Graceland using the original plans and blueprints, with the only alteration being raised ceilings to accommodate Elordi’s height.
