‘I’ve lost all confidence’: Singaporean worker opens up about battling anxiety and panic attacks daily

SINGAPORE: One Singaporean worker recently poured his heart out on Reddit, admitting that he has been struggling with “anxiety and panic attacks almost every day” for the past year because of his job.

In a post shared on the r/singaporejobs subreddit on Sunday (Nov 2), the worker wrote that he “can’t go a single day without crying, whether at the office or at home.” He also said that his mental state has declined so much that he has started isolating himself from his loved ones.

“I’ve been shutting myself off from my friends and family, and I’ve lost all confidence in my ability to do the tasks I’m assigned. I also get extremely anxious whenever I’m given something new, and my heart palpitations get so bad that I sometimes struggle to breathe (I hate it so much).”

Determined to turn things around, he said he has tried almost every possible remedy. He has attended therapy sessions, kept a journal, and made a conscious effort to remind himself to be “grateful” and to stop seeing himself as “weak.” Yet, despite all his efforts, nothing seems to have worked.

He also acknowledged, with a touch of resignation, that he knows exactly what some people might say once they read or hear his story.

“I know some people might say it’s the ‘strawberry generation’, that we can’t take hardship — and honestly, I somewhat agree. Deep down, I admit that I might have been too pampered and that I should be grateful, especially in this tough job market, for having a stable job. But how do I deal with all the anxiety attacks that come with it?” he asked.

“I am trying my best — I really am, but when will this be enough?”

“Try to find another job and working environment.”

Under his post, many readers shared heartfelt messages of support along with practical advice to help him cope with his anxiety.

One commenter gently reminded him to go easy on himself, writing, “My dude… don’t be so hard on yourself. Take a step back, take deep breaths, and focus. Don’t let the judgment of others determine your worth. Instead, consider what really matters to you and what you wanna do… and then what you can do to get to where you want to be.

“Life is a tough journey. Don’t let it beat you down. You are capable of more than you think. But first, you have to believe in and love yourself.”

Another advised him to look for a different job opportunity, saying, “If your job is the main cause of anxiety and panic attacks, try to find another job or working environment. Since the job market is very tough right now and you rely on your monthly income, don’t quit unless you’ve already found a new one.”

Meanwhile, a third chimed in to remind him that he’s not alone in feeling this way: “Hope it helps you somehow to know that almost everyone faces imposter syndrome, except some people mask it better than others. Please don’t be too hard on yourself. Find something that you can do without daily tears, even if it means taking a job that isn’t as secure or prestigious as your current one. You need good health to see you through. Take care.”

In other news, a woman took to Reddit to ask if it was “valid for her to feel upset” after her boyfriend didn’t bother to plan anything for their anniversary and even made her split the bill for their so-called special meal.

On Sunday (Nov 2), she posted on the r/SGexams forum, explaining that her boyfriend of two years has never been the type to put in much effort for special occasions.
