Singapore — Noise complaints are a common cause of tension among HDB residents. One, in particular, has managed to record his upstairs neighbour banging on the floor at 4 am.

“Really can go mental staying under crazy neighbour,” wrote someone using the name of Beh Beh Beh on Facebook page Complaint Singapore.

Two loud thumps can be heard in the accompanying video taken on Dec 8 at 4:52 am.

“Really no solution to stop this,” added the poster.

That prompted many others with similar experiences of unexplained late-night noises coming from neighbours upstairs.

One resident said that he had to put up with the situation for seven years, while another wondered why the neighbours, so quiet in the daytime, created disturbances only after nightfall.

Meanwhile, Facebook user Janice Lim offered this advice: Get footage of the noisy neighbour in question admitting to the banging. “Wait another night they bang, call police and show the video clips. Remember, don’t scold, threaten or say any nasty thing,” she added.

Another netizen had a similar encounter with confronting the source of the banging.

When asked if he had confronted the neighbour or submitted the complaint to the authorities, the author of the original post said that the person upstairs had already admitted to making the noise, yet the recording was not concrete enough evidence.

“All I called. They pushed the responsibility to each other…Police, MP, NEA (National Environment Agency), HDB,” said the author of the post.

According to property website PropertyGuru, one of the most successful ways to lodge a noise complaint is by calling the police.

The police may ask the caller to file a Magistrate’s Complaint, which can be done online if the neighbours are acting against the law, such as causing harassment, alarm, or distress.

The matter could also be taken to court, although only as a last resort if mediation failed to yield a solution.
