Privately Hired Teachers Pay for Parking too?

Obbana Rajah

Come August, teachers will have to pay for their parking just like every other civil servant.

But, what about privately hired teachers?

Singapore Chinese High School looks to have a discussion with members of the Ministry of Education (MOE) regarding this issue, as not all of their teachers are civil servants.

An MOE spokesperson explained that the rationale behind charging parking fees across all schools is that, “all public officers need to pay market rate parking charges to ensure that all salaries are accounted for with no hidden benefits”.

The situation is slightly more complicated for Singapore Chinese High School as not only is it the parent company of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) and Hwa Chong International, it also owns the land where the schools are situated.

Needless to say, just about everyone online is against the idea of teachers paying for parking.

Even new Secretary General of the Workers’ Party, Pritam Singh, expressed his stand against it.
