Netizens express disapproval over Mdm Halimah’s decision to stay in HDB

Last evening (Sept 14), Mdm Halimah Yacob was sworn in as Singapore’s eighth President at the Istana. But she did not stay at the official residence of the President of Singapore, choosing to return to her home in Yishun instead.

She had previously expressed her desire to continue living in her Yishun Avenue 4 jumbo unit flat. Most of Singapore’s past Presidents did not stay in the Istana, but Mdm Halimah is the first to be living in an HDB flat instead of a private property.

A video has surfaced online, showing how she is escorted by security to her white Mercedes Benz. In the video, there were four traffic police on motorcycles and two other cars accompanying her out of the car park.

However, netizens pointed out that such a motorcade will only cause inconvenience to everyone.

Some even reproached her for wasting taxpayer’s money to drive with security escorts from Yishun to the Istana, and back, every day.
