Workers’ Party helps seniors stay healthy with healthy ageing programmes

SINGAPORE: Movement is a key part of staying healthy, especially in our older years, and The Workers’ Party does its part with activities carried out toward this end, having held Healthy Aging Days in different areas this year.

Last weekend, the WP held a Sengkang-wide Healthy Aging Day, with the support of The WP Community Fund (WPCF), said Sengkang GRC MP Jamus Lim in a Nov 30 Facebook post. “In addition to morning exercises, we also had talks on nutrition and healthy eating choices for physical health, and art-as-therapy for mental health,” he wrote.

The MP said that while Sengkang is generally perceived to be a young town, many seniors live there alone or, more frequently, with their families.

Assoc Prof Lim underlined how important it is to make physical activity part of one’s daily lifestyle, telling the story of a former colleague who “never exercised a day in his life” but always took the stairs even when meetings were held on the tenth floor. The MP himself wrote that he would take his bicycle to work and then get a quick shower in before the workday started.

“Even taking a walk to and from the MRT station, instead of hopping on a feeder, could be a way to get a mini-workout in,” he added, thanking those who contributed to the activity, including former WP NCMP Yee Jenn Jong.

Assoc Prof Lim’s fellow Sengkang MP, Mr Louis Chua, shared a clip from the activity on his TikTok account, writing, “It’s healthy aging day 乐龄健康日 at Sengkang today! Where we discover new ways to stay active and healthy!”

Last month, the WPCF held a Healthy Aging Event in front of Heartland Mall, Kovan City. The activity, which included a “dancercise”, was attended by party chair Ms Sylvia Lim and vice chair Mr Faisal Manap, and what made it even more special was that Mr Faisal’s wife, Aidah, led the dancing.

“Sunday morning salsation! And the instructor is none other than Ms Aidah, aka Mrs Faisal Manap! This is part of WP Community Fund’s Healthy Aging Event @ Kovan City. Happening now! #WPCF #乐龄健康日,” wrote Ms Lim, 60, in an Oct 15 Instagram post.
