SINGAPORE: A woman who posted a clip on TikTok about her “worst date” in Tokyo, Japan, with a seemingly clueless Singaporean guy received much sympathy—especially from Singaporeans themselves.

Ms Tiffany Chen, an actress and comedian from the US, in a short clip, described how her date went, which has since gotten over 407,000 views. It’s captioned, “He was from Singapore #dating #hinge #tokyo”.

Ms Chen hilariously tells the story of her “fourth first date of 2023” while preparing a meal. She did admit that it was her fault, as the guy rather sketchily asked if he could come along when she said she had dinner plans after he asked her out. It should have been a red flag that she could have paid attention to but didn’t.

“What??? I have never, ever, had someone asked that. That’s just peculiar. Why would you want to join a dinner with someone else, you freak?” she said.

However, when the guy asked to meet her for drinks afterwards, she agreed, a decision she wholeheartedly regretted. The man did not match the “nice face” in his (teeny-tiny) profile picture.

He was not her type, she added. Things just went downhill after that, as the guy wanted to go on to the next bar after they had paid a 900 yen (S$8.25) seating fee.

“I’m gonna get my money’s worth in case you ask me to split the bill, which you look like you will,” she said. Ms Chen also called their conversation “abysmal,” giving the cringe-worthy example that after she said the last time she cried was the night before, the guy then asked her, “Is it cause I didn’t respond to your message?”

Two drinks in, and she was ready to call it a night. Unfortunately, when it was time to pay the bill, it turned out that the bar where they were didn’t allow them to pay with separate credit cards. So, instead of being a gentleman and paying for it, he just told her, “You get the next one.”

At the next bar, they had a drink in silence, with nothing to talk about, and when he asks if she wants another, she says she’s tired and heads for home.

Unfortunately for Singaporean guys, several commenters on Ms Chen’s video appear to think this is par of the course for them, with one popular comment being, “sg men”. /TISG
