SINGAPORE: In a July 22 Facebook post, Workers’ Party MP Gerald Giam (Aljunied GRC) did not ignore the elephant in the room, acknowledging the past week had been a “harrowing” one for the WP, with the double resignations of fellow Aljunied MP Leon Perera and WP Youth Wing President Nicole Seah over an extramarital affair that had taken place some time ago.
Nevertheless, despite losing “two very capable and hardworking comrades-in-arms to resignations,” he assured residents that the WP “will continue to stand with you and be your voices in Parliament” before asking: “Will you join our journey despite these setbacks?”
On Mr Perera and Ms Nicole being asked to resign, Mr Giam added, “this was necessary to uphold the high standards that the Party believes in.”
He noted that on that day, he and the team had gone to the Bedok Reservoir-Punggol division of Aljunied GRC, which they have done weekly for the past three years.
Mr Giam added that now, the party is also taking steps to ensure that the Serangoon residents, the ward that Mr Leon had been overseeing after the WP won in Aljunied in the 2020 General Election, would “continue to be well looked after.”
He also invited residents to send him messages via WhatsApp at 89250747, “and let’s chat.”
On Sunday (Jul 23), he wrote that he had visited Serangoon along with WP chief Pritam Singh, chair Sylvia Lim, and vice chair Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap, the MPs of Aljunied GRC.
They had gone “to touch base with residents and assure them” that the four WP MPs “ will continue to look after their needs and represent them in Parliament.”
