Mr Zainal Sapari, the MP of the ward in which the lift malfunction led to the death of the 77-year-old man, has commented in his Facebook about the incident.
Mr Zainal said that the town council was notified about the incident at 10.40am on Sunday (15 May), and that a lift rescue team was immediately sent to the site of the accident to suspend lift operations until the cause of the accident is established.
He further said that two town council officers went to the hospital to render assistance to the family of the injured man. He said that he was sad that the old man passed away on 16 May at 2.19 am and extended his deepest condolences to the family.
The MP for Pasir Ris GRC promised to fully cooperate with the police, Building & Construction Authority (BCA), as well as with the Authorised Examiner appointed by the town council in establishing the cause of the accident.
The deceased, Mr Lim Hang Chiang, was to have celebrated his 78th birthday on May 20, and the family was planning to have an early birthday celebration for him.
Mr Lim’s youngest son in speaking to the media said: “My dad did not go out very often, only on Sundays or to my brother’s house. But he was strong, and a good man. He did everything by himself, even with preexisting conditions…he suffered a stroke 17, 18 years ago and also had a hip replacement operation. But he was strong. I’ve lived with him all my life, till his last.”
