Khaw promises SDP that he will leave no stones unturned investigating death of SMRT staff

Representatives of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) paid their last respects to the two young men who passed away in the accident on the MRT track near Pasir Ris station. The Transport Minister, Mr Khaw Boon Wan, was also there at the wake of Nasrulhudin and Muhammad Asyraf.
SDP’s CEC member Mr Jufrie Mahmood urged the Transport Minister to not leave any stones unturned in the Ministry’s investigations. “What happened does not make sense,” Mr Jufrie told Mr Khaw.
The Transport Minister agreed to do so.
Both men killed joined SMRT in January 2016 were part of a technical team of 15 that went down to the track to investigate a reported alarm from a condition monitoring device for signalling equipment. Track access was authorised and the men had been on the walkway alongside the track.
SMRT has confirmed that the two Singaporean on-the-job-trainees were hit by the train despite following the train operator’s safety protocols. The incident happened about 150 metres away from Pasir Ris MRT station.
SMRT’s CEO, Desmond Kuek, further confirmed that the maintenance investigation was a “supervised activity” and that a supervisor had been walking in front of the two men killed.
TODAY, a local newspaper however reported that it understands that the victims “were on the other side of the track from the dedicated walkway for maintenance staff when they were hit by the train.”
