Serangoon becomes ‘Sext Station’ and Boon Keng ‘Bolo Kene Station’ in MRT train display glitch

Passengers experienced a technical glitch on the MRT display monitors as destinations became “Sext” instead of Serangoon and “Bolo Kene” instead of Boon Keng stations.

The North East Line train display monitor began showing different station names on Thursday (Nov 24), amusing netizens after photos were posted on Instagram and Reddit.

One photo showed that Serangoon Station became “Sext Station”, while in another case, Boon Keng Station became “Bolo Kene.”

The photos tickled some humour among netizens who said that the “Multiverse was real” or that passengers were headed to “meet the council of wizards like in Shazam.”

Others wondered if this was the doing of an intern or hacker playing a prank.

Meanwhile, a Redditor noted that this could only happen if a diagnostics test was being conducted on the train’s computer network.

“Doesn’t look like anything malicious happened. It looks like the connection that feeds the display with characters is bad, which results in corrupted text,” another Redditor added.

SBS Transit has since confirmed that there was a technical glitch on one of the display monitors on a North East Line train on Thursday.

“[The train] was taken off service on the same day when the issue was spotted by a staff,” said Grace Wu, SBS Transit’s Vice President of Customer Experience and Communications to AsiaOne.

The transit company is investigating the issue and apologised for any inconvenience caused to passengers. /TISG
