Is getting your own place the biggest benefit of getting married in Singapore?

One Redditor, who wrote in a much-commented thread on Thursday, claimed he sees “no other benefits to marriage and kids.”

The post from BigAd2377 showed his point of view on marriage, as it paints a picture of a man with no time and money for himself, surrounded by “crying babies”.

As a single, he argued, life is enjoyable and free, even as he has little free time because of work.

“Have to take a care of crying babies.

No time for yourself, no time for gaming, no time for hobbies.

No money for yourself as all go to wife and kids.

I find that its much more enjoyable being single as I have the freedom to do whatever I want anytime I want.

My daily life is just sleep, eat, gym, work, game, and repeat and I already find not having much time for myself after work.

I wonder how married couples with kids cope with life especially in Singapore where it’s so stressful.”

He then received advice from a man who first became a father at 38 years old. “Marriage and Parenting are some of the most difficult things people will do their whole lives. The reward is a full heart if done right. Otherwise staying single may be better,” the commenter wrote.

Another wrote that marriage and a family keep the loneliness away, especially when more and more of one’s peers themselves get married.

Others encouraged him to take a less self-centred point of view.

“Marriage is not about yourself. It’s a union of people, you take care of that union.

Building something in life gives meaning to life for some,” wrote one Redditor.

Another chimed in, “Life isnt always suppose to be easy but having a family helps you look forward to someone at the end of the day..

Trust me when you turn 60 you’re gonna need someone there for you.”

One addressed the housing aspect of the post.

“Everyone has their personal reasons/pressure/circumstances when making decisions and I don’t think there is a general answer to it. However, I am very sure BTO is not one of those.”

Another commenter advised the man to “You do you – as long as you’re enjoying your life and feel fulfilled, don’t get married,” but to be ready to change this as well.
