Singaporean Birthday Bash Turns Viral with the Infectious Don Don Donki Song: Anime Lovers and Partygoers Unite!

When one walks through the aisles of Japanese discount store Don Quijote, or Don Don Donki in Singapore, it’s challenging to tune out the jingle by Japanese singer Maima Tanaka. Shoppers might even catch themselves bopping their heads to the beat.

Things reached a new level after a crowd was caught on camera jamming to the store jingle. Local cosplayer Rithe held her birthday “level up” party on July 16 in collaboration with a group of hobbyist DJs, Golden Mix.

A video of the event, with Rithe fans holding glow sticks, jumping and shouting “Don Don Donki” to the music, went viral online.

While LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem or Black Eyed Peas’ I Gotta Feeling is more commonly played at parties to bring the hype in a crowd, imagine jamming to a store jingle.

Golden Mix events centre around the Anikura culture (short for anime and “kurabu,” the Japanese term for “club”). Fans of all things anime could enjoy nostalgic music in a party setting.

“We all love to share memes and funny stuff online… that’s why we did it,” said the event organizer Benjamin Ho to MustShare News.

The video garnered mixed responses from the online community. Some were shaken, like Facebook user Amanda Wee who said, “I was not expecting this at all.”

Meanwhile, many admitted that “this was their kind of party” or “the kind of rave we need.”

Rithe also commented on the video, saying it was the “best birthday ever.”

For those interested, here’s the English translation of some of the phrases of the song that easily gets stuck in the brain.

“When I’m free, I take myself to Don Don Donki. All my dreams come true, they do, whenever I go there.”

“Don Don Don Donki, Don Don Donki. I’m in paradise, it’s a wonderful place for me… Let’s go find something good and new tonight.” /TISG
